3rd NFDIxCS Symposium

The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) aims to translate discipline-specific research data and research software (research artifacts) management practices into a supporting infrastructure that adhere to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). National Research Data Infrastructure for and with Computer Science (NFDIxCS) is the consortium for the computer science community.

The Research Data Management Container (RDMC) is a central conceptual framework to seal the current research output, enable reproducibility and preserve artifact in accordance with good scientific practice. One of the working directions of the consortium is centred on implementing a workflow to create RDMCs for publication processes, which could be artifact evaluation tracks at conferences.

Building on these efforts, the third NFDIxCS symposium will explore how experiences and developments from various disciplines within the computer science community can inform the design of workflows and infrastructures (such as those for artifact evaluation, badging systems, metadata standards, registries, persistent identifiers (PIDs) or computational and archiving platforms) that support FAIR principles and are embedded into conferences, journals, and institutional workflows.

The symposium will include discussions on how to collaborate with these presented approaches in the context of NFDIxCS, with the goal of enabling seamless support for research artifact management across computer science disciplines.

Topics of Interest

The NFDIxCS-Symposium invites presentations, demonstrations, and discussions that address conceptual, technical, and organizational dimensions of open research artifact and their evaluation. Each presentation has a total duration of 30 minutes (20min talk + 10min discussion). A focus lies on solutions, workflows, and cross-domains as well as cultural challenges that influence the adoption and standardization of artifact evaluation practices:

• Infrastructure and integration tools:   
  • Platforms and frameworks for the submission, validation and publication of research artifact;
  • Metadata schemas, semantic annotations and ontologies that enhance machine-actionability;
  • Middleware and services that support the integration of artifact workflow into research infrastructure.
     
• Cross-Domain practices and cultural challenges:
  • Evaluation criteria and quality checklists across diverse computer science and interdisciplinary domains
  • Insights from initiatives such as ACM artifact review and badging process
  • Institutional, disciplinary and cultural barriers to adoption of artifact evaluation

Presentations should ideally contribute to the overarching aim of the symposium: connecting community-driven practices to practical workflows and infrastructures that support FAIR principles within computer science. We especially welcome contributions that:

• Are grounded in the computer science community, reflecting disciplinary needs, practices, or challenges;
• Connect to the NFDIxCS topics or overall architecture concept of NFDI, contributing conceptually or practically to ongoing efforts;
• Demonstrate a level of maturity that allows for constructive discussion and potential integration into workflows or infrastructure development.

Submission 

We warmly invite contributions from all interested participants. Please submit a short abstract (minimum 250 words) for each proposed contribution. Abstracts may be submitted in German or English. However, all presentations are expected to be delivered in English.

Submission should be made via NFDIxCS Symposium 2025 no later than August 15, 2025. 

All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the symposium committee and evaluated based on their alignment and relevance to the symposium themes. 

As part of our dissemination strategy, we plan to publish a summary report capturing the key outcomes of the symposium presentations and valuable discussion points. This report will be openly available via Zenodo community and the NFDIxCS blog.
