Welches Wissen brauchen angehende Softwareentwickler*innen, wenn es um Green Coding geht? Die Studie „Bridging the Skills Gap: Insights from Professional Software Developers into the Challenges and Opportunities Faced by Young Career Starters Integrating Green Coding into Practice“ von unseren Projektmitgliedern Dennis Junger und Volker Wohlgemuth geht dieser Frage auf den Grund.
Die Ergebnisse der Studie wurden bereits im letzten Jahr bei der EnviroInfo 2024 vorgestellt. Auch in diesem Jahr sind wir wieder bei der Konferenz dabei und stellen aktuelle Ergebnisse aus dem Projekt vor. Am Mittwoch 17.09. finden folgende Veranstaltungen mit unserem Projektteam statt:

Abstract
The rise of green coding, an approach to software development that prioritizes energy efficiency and sustainability, presents a significant opportunity to reduce the environmental impact of the IT industry. However, integrating green coding practices into existing workflows and systems poses substantial challenges, particularly for junior developers. This paper examines how to effectively prepare juniors for their future roles, focusing on equipping them with the skills and mindset needed to overcome the barriers to green coding implementation. Our methodology involved conducting a semi-structured expert interview with senior developers, IT managers, and sustainability advocates across various industries during a conference workshop. These interviews provided valuable insights into the challenges juniors face when trying to implement green coding practices and revealed strategies that have proven effective in overcoming these barriers. The qualitative data gathered from these interviews was analyzed to identify key themes and recommendations for shaping a curriculum that prepares juniors for both technical and organizational challenges. The findings highlight juniors’ dual challenges: mastering the technical aspects of green coding and navigating organizational dynamics that often resist change. Based on these insights, we emphasize the importance of integrating green coding principles into both the educational curriculum and the tools provided to juniors. A successful approach must blend technical training with soft skills education, such as change management, communication, and problem-solving, to prepare juniors for the realities of advocating for sustainability in a professional setting. We propose a curriculum that incorporates green coding practices with real-world applications, such as improving legacy systems for better energy efficiency. In addition, the curriculum should address organizational awareness, teaching student show to build credibility, influence stakeholders, and drive sustainable change within their teams. By combining technical skills with strategic soft skills, the proposed curriculum aims to create a new generation of developers capable of leading the transition towards greener software practices. Preparing juniors in this comprehensive manner is essential to advance green coding initiatives and achieve broader sustainability goals in the IT industry.
