Green Coding in Summer - News from the Project
Berlin's summertime brings more than just heat - it also brings two big events: the Long Night of Science (Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften) and the re:publica. The "Potentials of Green Coding" project was present at both. And now you can also listen to the project: Dev-Insider interviewed Carolin Henze, project coordinator of the "Potentials of Green Coding" project at the GI.
Berlin, 11th July 2023 - The re:publica, a conference for the digital society, took place this year from 5th to 7th June at the Arena Berlin and the Festsaal Kreuzberg. On the second day, the German Informatics Society organised a meeting on the topic "System Failure: Is computer science crashing our ecosystems?" The Green Coding project team attended the event to discuss the conflicting relationship between computing and sustainability. Both the devastating effects of digital technologies on the environment and the potential of sustainable software programming were addressed.
One week later, on 17th June 2023, the Long Night of Science (Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften) took place at numerous locations throughout Berlin. At the Museum of Natural History, Prof. Dr. Volker Wohlgemuth from the Berlin University of Applied Sciences gave a brief talk in the Speakers' Corner. He explained how green coding can be used to optimise the energy and resources used by software.
Dev-Insider, a specialist portal on software development, launched a podcast this month. In the first episode, Stephan Augsten interviewed Carolin Henze, project coordinator of the Green Coding project. In this episode they discuss how emails, images and podcasts contribute to energy and resource consumption, the estimated CO2 emissions of the entire internet and why sustainable programming is best taught in schools.
