Honorary members of the GI
Outstanding services to computer science deserve our respect: The Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI) recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the GI as a professional society and to computer science as a discipline. If more than half of the Executive Committee votes in favour with a maximum of two votes against, it can appoint the proposed person as an honorary member.

Prof. Dr Dr h.c. mult. Heinz Schwärtzel
Prof. Dr Dr h.c. mult. Heinz Schwärtzel, as a leading manager, succeeded in combining industrial and academic demands on computer science research and development in an outstanding way. As GI President, he rendered outstanding services after German reunification by successfully integrating computer science experts from the new federal states into the GI. Heinz Schwärtzel co-founded the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern and Saarbrücken as well as the International Meeting and Research Centre for Computer Science (IBFI, now the Leibniz Centre for Computer Science) at Schloss Dagstuhl. This has also earned him international recognition. His honours also include the Saarland Order of Merit and the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art. Heinz Schwärtzel was made an honorary member in 2008.
