Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main is ready for take off!

From October 27 to December 1 Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main, the German open cultural data hackathon, will be coming to Mainz. For five weeks, devoted fans of culture and hacking alike will prototype, code and design to make open cultural data come alive. With its wealth of cultural heritage institutions and historical places, Rhine-Main region is now more than ready for this popular hacking event.

Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main aims to create new software applications from digital collections of all kinds, coming from a wide range of cultural institutions all over Rhein-Main area. And the best thing: all those fresh ideas and applications will in turn benefit both culture and society, because Open Data Licenses make it possible! Drawing from the concepts of OpenData and OpenCulture cross-European cultural heritage is remixed and re-contextualized and in this is made accessible to a wide audience in a way it has never been before.

At the beginning of Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main, teams form at our Kick Off on October 27 and 28, 2018, taking place at “Alte Mensa” at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and start sketching their ideas based on data provided by different cultural heritage institutions. Within the following five-week code sprint teams work out prototypes and ready-for-use applications. The most exciting applications that emerge from our hackathon will finally be awarded in various categories on December 1, 2018 at Landesmuseum Mainz.

Over the past four years, more than 400 Coding da Vinci participants have developed about 70 digital applications, using over 100 data sets from 99 cultural heritage and research institutions. All those projects are characterized by great diversity of ideas and high technical expertise, ranging from mobile apps and websites to interactive installations, augmented reality applications and even hardware prototypes.

Coding da Vinci Rhein-Main is a joint project of mainzed - Mainz Center for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Studies, University Library Mainz, Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz, Specialized Information Service for Performing Arts, German Digital Library, University and State Library Darmstadt, Stadt- und Stiftsarchiv Aschaffenburg, Historical Museum Frankfurt, Wikipedia Frankfurt and NODE Forum for Digital Arts.
