SUMMARY:RG Aachen (RIA): Process Science and Data Science - Match Made in H
 eaven!
DESCRIPTION:Eintritt frei.
ebiet und in seiner Gruppe.\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\nThe Process and Data Scienc
e (PADS) group, headed by prof.dr.ir. Wil van der Aalst, is a new research
unit in RWTH’s Department of Computer Science. The scope of PADS includes a
ll activities where discrete processes are analyzed, reengineered, and/or s
upported in a data-driven manner. Process-centricity is combined with an ar
ray of Data Science techniques.\n\nThis talk will introduce Process Mining
as a novel way to turn event data into valuable insights, predictions, and
decisions. Events refer to activities executed by resources at particular t
imes and for particular cases. Such event data are collected everywhere; in
logistics, manufacturing, finance, healthcare, customer relationship manag
ement, e-learning, e-government, and many other domains. Process Mining can
be used to discover the real processes, to detect deviations from normativ
e processes, and to analyze bottlenecks and waste.\n\nThe interplay between
Process Science and Data Science generates many interesting research probl
ems. For example, how to deal with terabytes of event data scattered over d
ozens of database tables? How to use process mining responsibly (e.g., ensu
re fairness and confidentiality)? How to amalgamate Process Mining with Ope
rations Research approaches (optimization, simulation, etc.)? These questio
ns are scientifically interesting and practically relevant. This is illustr
ated by the 25+ commercial Process Mining tools based on the ideas develope
d by prof. van der Aalst and his colleagues. His talk will show different t
ools and their use in a variety of domains.\n\n\n\nIn Kooperation mit Fachg
ruppe Informatik, der Regionalgruppe der Gesellschaft für Informatik (RIA)
und des Regionalen Industrieclubs Informatik Aachen (Regina e.V.)
